According to the NBS, household dinar savings stood at around RSD 250 billion at the end of October 2026, 21% more than at the start of the year. An NBS analysis shows that saving in dinars has paid off better than saving in euros since 2012.

How much people save

According to the latest National Bank of Serbia data, dinar savings stood at around RSD 250 billion at the end of October 2026, RSD 42.8 billion (21%) more than at the start of the year. Foreign-currency savings grew by EUR 1.3 billion (7.9%) over the same period to EUR 17.4 billion.

The share of dinar savings in total household savings was 11% at the end of September, compared with just 1.9% in September 2012.

Which terms people choose

Deposits of six months to one year grew the most (RSD 29.3 billion) and make up 57.6% of dinar savings. They are followed by three-to-six-month deposits (up RSD 12.2 billion) and sight deposits (up RSD 6.8 billion).

The average dinar deposit at the end of September was RSD 223,000, and RSD 1.3 million excluding the smallest deposits of up to RSD 10,000.

Why dinar savings pay off better

The NBS cites three reasons: higher interest rates on dinar than on euro savings, no tax on interest earned on dinar savings, and a relatively stable dinar-euro exchange rate.

According to the NBS analysis, someone who deposited RSD 100,000 for one year in September 2012 and rolled it over every year would have had over RSD 60,000 more in September 2026 than a saver who kept the same amount in euros. One-year dinar deposits paid off better in 99% of the periods observed.

Year-on-year inflation was 4.1% in September, within the NBS target range of 3 ± 1.5%.
