What happened
At its session on 30 October 2026, the Executive Board of the National Bank of Serbia decided to revoke the operating licence of ALTA banka a.d. Beograd. It also found that the conditions for the bank's bankruptcy are met.
The bank is now managed by the Deposit Insurance Agency, which the court will appoint as bankruptcy administrator.
Why
According to the NBS, the decision followed supervisory activities requiring the bank to increase its liquidity. The bank's financial position deteriorated significantly, putting depositors' interests at risk. The NBS says the decision was made to protect depositors and preserve financial stability.
Savings and account balances
Deposits are insured up to the dinar equivalent of EUR 50,000 per depositor, under the Law on Deposit Insurance.
According to the Deposit Insurance Agency, payment of insured amounts starts no later than seven working days after the Commercial Court in Belgrade opens bankruptcy proceedings. The Agency will publish the conditions, places and deadlines for payment in the media and on aod.rs no later than three working days after that decision. We will update this article as soon as the notice is published.
Loans
The NBS states that the procedure in no way releases the bank's debtors from their obligations. Borrowers of ALTA banka must keep repaying their loans; repayment instructions will come from the bankruptcy administrator.
Cards and branches
According to media reports, clients currently cannot use the bank's payment cards or payment services, and branches are temporarily closed. Check the Deposit Insurance Agency's notices before visiting a branch.

Frequently asked questions
Is my money at ALTA banka insured?
Yes, up to the dinar equivalent of EUR 50,000 per depositor. Deposits of individuals, entrepreneurs and micro, small and medium-sized companies are insured. All accounts and savings at the bank are added up, with interest until the day bankruptcy opens.
When and where can I withdraw my money?
Payment starts no later than seven working days after the court opens bankruptcy proceedings. The Deposit Insurance Agency announces the place of payment on aod.rs and in the media no later than three working days after that decision.
In which currency is an insured deposit paid?
Dinar deposits are paid in dinars and foreign-currency deposits in euros, at the middle exchange rate on the day bankruptcy opens.
What if I have more than EUR 50,000?
The amount above the insured limit is filed as a claim in the bankruptcy proceedings and paid from the bank's assets as far as possible. The NBS says depositors will be told how to file their other claims.
Do I still have to repay my loan?
Yes. According to the NBS, the procedure does not release the bank's debtors from their obligations. This also applies to overdrafts and credit card debt. Repayment instructions will come from the bankruptcy administrator after bankruptcy opens.
